Charenton Church - Part 1 - "Indian Creek" known today as "Charenton." Owing to the information of a sincere octogenarian who has taken an active part in the organization of this parish, and also to the parish registers giving the precise dates referring to the different missions in the place; I will undertake with all the possible precision the historical background of the "Immaculate Conception" parish formerly known as "Indian Creek." This was the first name given to the locality. The word "creek" so called because of the Bayou Teche which moves its waters in a bending form across the fields; the word "Indian"  was added because of the "Techi-Ti-matchas" tribe which resides here, on the shores of the grand lake. Today, these same Indians still have their own reserved sections and though civilized, they have partly kept the customs of their ancestors. Righteousness of character and honesty have remained a mark of distinction among these Indians; but very often when he associates with the white man, this noble character little by little fades away and soon he loses the esteem and the respect of the public. The first church was built in 1842. First priests came from New Iberia. (Charenton Ch.: v.3, p.290-A)

Charenton Church - Part 2 - To bring forth the history of this tribe would be rather the work of a great historian. As far back as can be remembered, the Chetimatchas tribe resides at Indian Creek and on the shores of the grand lake; even today we often speak about their mode of living: their ability in hunting and fishing, their medical knowledge and their skill in the making of beautiful baskets. They have always manifested great respect towards their dead and their belief was that the deceased enjoyed in a better world the same advantages as those upon earth but in a more perfect manner. From this belief was derived the custom to bury theirs with all those things which they had been fond of in life: pipe, arrow, tomahawk, etc. Their remains were kept in a reserved place so that on the last day all would arise together, this place called "Butte Valeur" is a hillock of earth and shell-fish which is visible even today and the locality bears the same name. The first church was built in 1842. First priests came from New Iberia. (Charenton Ch.: v.3, p.290-A)

Charenton Church - Part 3 - There was a critical moment among the Chetimatchas at the time when they were invaded by civilization and for a long time they struggled in order to remain indians - they succeeded for many years but finally they were obliged to give up hope because many among them were for civilization, they were the minority; the others preferred indian life. Such difficulties brought war among them, much blood was shed and the partisans of the indian life together with their chief were victorious and remained as one tribe under one chief for many years, but years later they were conquered to civilization. From then on they would be seen, some wearing hats, others with shoes and thus they adopted Christian manners. Again they were living in peace, many settled together on the same property, while others scattered themselves on the shores of the lake, but they were not to remain sheltered from all dangers because on Christmas Day of the year 1898 a serious charge was brought upon them. Whiskey has been the cause. Some white men armed with guns penetrated the indian settlement to make legal arrestations; they found the indians with guns and hatchets and after a fierce battle these indians were found shot to death and a white man near death also. The civil authorities took matters into their own hands but . . . strange to say, everything was forgotten; there was no traial and no one was found guilty; the three indian victims were buried in the Cemetery of Charenton. The first church was built in 1842. First priests came from New Iberia. (Charenton Ch.: v.3, p.290-A)

Charenton Church - Part 4 - As for religion, the Chetimachas are Catholics; the first indian family to adopt the Catholic doctrine was the Bertue family. Then the Darden, etc... finally their chief - "Soulier Rouge" [Red Shoes] himself embraced the true faith; he died only a few years ago and was buried in the parochial cemetery with the other indians. In the year 1898 Indian Creek became Charenton, a name not flattered by those who know something about its origin. Leclair G. Fuselier, having chosen this locality with the intention of making it a village wanted to give it a name and at the time that the divisions of the vilage were established the citizens were of a peculiar originality such as to make impossible an understanding among them. . . The first church was built in 1842. First priests came from New Iberia. (Charenton Ch.: v.3, p.290-A)
